The deficit isn't caused by the basic Social Security and Medicare, it's caused by the tax cuts to the rich. Before the tax cuts there were funded reasonably well, though they may have needed some smaller increases. With Bush's irreponsible financial madness the situation has turned into a train wreck.
There's little point in the argument against entitlements. People have paid money into them all their lives and if you think they will vote for someone who takes them away to give tax cuts to the rich instead you are mistaken. The real issue will be how many more entitlements like the ones Bush is offering will be given to that voting block.
So the real question is when the tax cut madness will be changed and taxes raised to pay for the tax loan. The whole idea was just a con to buy votes anyway. There's not a responsible economist in the world who thinks otherwise. Tax cuts to a load of people like Mr Burns off the Simpsons isn't going to stimulate the economy.
