Like I said, I used to read all the libertarian material in the 70's and of course read about Greenspan then. It would be hard not to, he was one of the biggest names along with "Towards a new liberty" Murray Rothbard.
Greenspan isn't an extremist, he sees the need for some government regulation as well or he'd be living in a commune somewhere. Libertarianism belongs to the left and right, and socialism manifests in the left and right as well.
I don't believe (and apparently neither does Greenspan) that libertarianism in its pure form is a desirable goal. Since it puts the individual ahead of society it can create an imbalance and sometimes society should prevail. Government naturally arises as the power of society over the individual. Of course it can go too far and society can have too much control of the individual as well.
The Bushes must have been sitting up the back at the Ayn Rand lectures.
