re: you must be kidding

Certainly any additional spending is dangerous, whether it is from promises of the left and right. The left however are in an election and have to offer something to their base, not just say the Republicans done spent it all. Consequently they would naturally be taking some pork back off the right and giving it to the left.

As I said it's two kinds of socialism, of the left and right. The Democrats need to present a plan to cut all spending drastically, and it won't be social security because that democraphic will vote out whoever touches it. The Medicare bill will have to be rethought and cut back. Many believe the actual cost is mainly from pork to the right, so a bare bones plan favouring neither side may have to be attempted.

Put down your coffee before I say this, but the best bet would be to bring back Clinton who was truly a fiscal conservative (insert blah blah about Gingrich here). This is why I think Dean is good because he has the record of being a fiscal conservative as well as universal health care. So I still think Dean would do the best job by the Republicans. I'm not saying Bush would lose but as Andrew Sullivan points out it makes sense to look at which Democrat does the best job the Republicans won't do.

A Democrat should be aiming to bring the budget back to what it was at the end of Clinton plus inflation.
