Current Events » in reply to re: Dick Cheney -- still lying after all these years

Of course it's a better lie . . .

. . . but you have to consider the context. Cheney told his "reconstituted nuclear
weapons" lie on Meet the Press (3/16/03):

Q: "And even though the International Atomic Energy Agency said he does not have a
nuclear program, we disagree?"

Cheney: "I disagree, yes. And you'll find the CIA, for example, and other key parts of
our intelligence community disagree. Let's talk about the nuclear proposition for a minute
.… We know that based on intelligence, that [Saddam] has been very, very good at hiding
these kinds of efforts. He's had years to get good at it and we know he has been
absolutely devoted to trying to acquire nuclear weapons. And we believe he has, in fact,
reconstituted nuclear weapons. I think Mr. ElBaradei, frankly, is wrong."

He qualifies the lie by saying "we believe . . ." If he says he believes in Santa Claus and
the Tooth Fairy and deficits don't matter, you can be reasonably certain he's lying, but you
can't know for sure.

OTOH, when Cheney talked about all the times he's looked at the "crosses row on row"
in Arlington Memorial Cemetery and thought about the terrible price paid, you KNOW that's a
lie. There are no crosses row on row.

It's a better lie because it's unequivocal.

“I don't know anybody that I can think of who has contended that the Iraqis had
nuclear weapons… I don't know anybody in any government or any intelligence agency
who suggested that the Iraqis had nuclear weapons. That's fact number one.”
