All those people have one thing in common.

Except for the ones that are deliberate hoaxsters and liars.

The honest ones all want to believe something really badly. It is important to their world view that something be true, desperately important, because it explains away some major contradiction or inconsistency, perhaps even some deep perceived personal failure in their lives. Every thing they see or learn is interpreted with that end in mind, they selectively bend reality to fit the desired result. They have constructed their alternate universe and they reinforce it constantly, each misinterpretation and delusion acting as further evidence.

We all do this to a certain extent, usually it is about inconsequential things that don't really matter. I once convinced myself Skin-So-Soft hand lotion actually repelled mosquitoes. I learned the hard way it didn't. But some of us get carried away, and as long there isn't some equivalent of having thirsty insects feasting on your blood, you will carry your anomaly about UFOs, Bigfoot, Astrology, Atlantis or Politics to your grave. Unfortunately, for things like
UFOs, religious fundamentalism, or ideological panaceas, there are no mosquitoes.
