re: Welfare and the village

When I heard that term, “It takes a Village to Raise a Child,” I was thinking the same thing- Hillary was talking about the government being the village.

It takes a mom and dad to raise a child. When they fail, society needs to step in. The community should take care of its own, without the government (Whenever the government gets involved, so much money is wasted). Every year, my small church will find 70 to 80 homeless families to help. There are rules for our program. They have to be a husband and wife with at least one kid. They have to stay off drugs. They have to seek employment, which we help with. It has been a successful program and I bet we do it at a fraction of what it cost the government.

That is just one example.

An interesting side note. I saw some figures last week (I think over on the Space BBS) that if you take all the money NASA has gotten since it was founded (In the 1950’s?) and add it up, it is still less than one year of government spending on social programs. Social programs get between a half a trillion and two thirds trillion a year.

I have seen examples of social program waste, like the one were the doctors were bussing in healthy poor, giving them something for coming, and then filing huge Medicare claims. Such waste.
