In my family, the famous saying when one hasn't a candidate to support is, "Well, it's Election Day! I have someone to vote against!" Sometimes you have to settle for the "will of the people" instead of the candidate you wanted.
It's a very valid reason to vote. Without someone who will do a great job, select someone who will do a less bad job. When not satisfied with the incumbent, vote him or her out of office and change the dynamic. And an especial favorite, when the legislature is owned by one party, make sure that the executive is held by the other.
If the Democrats had had that last problem to deal with in the 1960s, their radicals wouldn't have had as big a stage to stand on, and they would be a stronger party today.
And the Republicans... may profit from their example. Though I doubt they will.
