My vote: Virgin Islands.
Alberta might be tough, as you know, for the simple reason that it's still a Canadian province. I used to think the absorbtion of parts of Canada into the US would be a good and natural thing (manifest destiny and all that), but I'm not so sure anymore.
There are many subtle differences between the Canadian and American mindsets that go far beyond the admittedly more obvious similarities. There's a spirit of Liberalism* (even in Texas-like Alberta) that would simply find itself unwelcomed by many if not most Americans.
Canada, as it is, with all its "crazy" socialist ideas, deserves to continue to exist. Needs to continue to exist, if I may be so bold.
*Used here primarily but not exclusively in the political sense. Think Canadian Liberal Party. Yes, even in Alberta.
