Depends on how you use the pistol

If he'd taken the pistol and turned it on those who were trying to kill him, history might have turned out differently. Who offered him the pistol? Was it Goring or Himmler, or was it some lower level functionary? The article doesn't say, but could it's interesting to speculate how history might've been different had either of those men died in 1934. After all, Goring was the head of the Luftwaffe and Himmler was the head of the SS. Still, Goring was a pretty inept leader, so if he'd died early, his replacement might've been someone competent, which would've been a bad thing. On the other hand, it might've been Udet, the top scoring German pilot to survive WWI but who ended up committing suicide early in the war.

...when he did not commit suicide, the door was thrown open and he died in hail of gunfire.

Odds are, he still would've died that night. However, had he taken a few of Hitler's henchmen with him, it might have set a precedent to resist arrest by thugs.
