Cognitive dissonance

It seems strange to me that some folks can have two completely different, extreme views about the Saddam situation at the same time.

One, that Saddam is so HATED in Iraq that NO ONE is willing to defend him, AND

Two, that Saddam is so LOVED by many Iraqis that his loyalists are responsible for the continuing fight against the American invasion and occupation. Against overwhelming odds and force.

Doesn't that do things to a person's mind, trying to wrap it around both concepts simultaneously?

(It's important to not completely believe one's own propaganda.)
