Rooting for the bad guys

Two, that Saddam is so LOVED by many Iraqis that his loyalists are responsible for the continuing fight against the American invasion and occupation. Against overwhelming odds and force.

Thanks for my morning laugh Bowser.

There are no Saddam Loyalists. There are only Sunni Muslims fearful that the Shiites will turn Iraq into Iran. They fight American forces because they believe the US is setting up a Shiite dominant government that will eventually take away their style of living.

The Shiites fundamentalists are attacking the US to help facilitate the Shiite takeover and because they buy into the holy soil/infidel bit. (the Koran is the only book they've ever read) Many of these attackers are not even Iraqis, but are from all around Iraq - mainly Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Iran.

It's really pretty darn simple.*

*Well, admittedly not for those who project their own unhappiness into anti-American diatribes and which is really a subconscious way they can hate their neighbors and fellow Americans and justify it.

For those folks, Iraq is a quagmire that reflects their own subconscious brambles. For these folks the terrorists are the oppressed and the US is the oppressor as they illustrate the late stage symptoms of a highly developed persecution complex and so sympathize with insurgents and terrorists against the bringers of freedom and democracy. These same folks support Palestinian suicide bombers and smiled as Britain pulled down it's flag over Hong Kong. If they're old enough, they supported the Viet Cong and Ho Chi Minh, thought the Shah got his just desserts and have always thought Fidel Castro was good for Cuba. If they are older still - they probably thought Chiang Kai-Shek got what he deserved. If they are the equivalent of a modern Grandma Moses they cheered upon news of the Tsar and his family's assassination in Ekaterinburg.

I would love to brush them off as just idiots, but its much more complex and rooted in psychological issues. Many otherwise intelligent people end up rooting for the bad guys.

Unfortunately too many folks have such a complex. Which makes my laugh and levity short lived as I realize the statement masks only a saddening statistic.
