~sigh~ Why do you think McCain is at the Republican Convention?

Hint: It's not because he likes George W. Bush.

Party discipline. That's where it's at with the Republicans. Sure McCain is of an independent cast, but his own party will cut him off at the knees in the Senate if he doesn't tow the line. Really.

Does he have any project dear to his heart that he wants to finish before he retires? He had better play ball this week, because if this President is reelected and he doesn't, he can fuggedaboudit.

If McCain had accepted the Democratic nomination, he would not have had to quit. He would have been kicked out.

That the Democrats haven't done this to Miller is not a measure of Democratic niceness, but of their weakness as a party. They're going to have to get everyone to step behind the leadership if the party isn't going to fall to pieces. That's just the way it is.

The only bipartisanship that makes any sense in a two party system is the kind that negotiates in good faith on the floor of the legislature and between branches of government after everyone has consolidated their power and established their overall strategy. No party politician in his or her right mind thought the McCain candidacy for Kerry's VP was anything more than a brilliant opportunity to show the Democrats reaching across the aisle, and otherwise a pipedream. McCain could never have accepted that nomination and stayed in the Republican party. It's no fun eating alone in the Senate cafeteria, no matter how good the food is.
