How? Jeffords was a hero, in the media/dnc's eyes for leaving the party

Miller has made the point that he will not leave the party, but he will point out that the party ahs left him.
He honors the traditions of the party, and points out that what Kerry represents is to him a great departure and failure.
Jeffords said much the same thing but turned it into a power play that rewarded him personally with a chairmanship and put Daschle into majority leader.
