re: We don't hear much about the Tories.

Not surprisingly, it took reading A Few Bloody Noses, by British historian Robert Harvey, to learn about the American Revolution's Southern campaigns. The standard history most of us learn glosses over that entire phase of the war, skipping almost directly from the Battle of Trenton to the siege of Yorktown (without explaining why Cornwallis became bottled up on the James River peninsula).

A couple of months later, I finally saw The Patriot (the Mel Gibson movie). Much of its background is accurate -- at least regarding the general way the Rebellion played out in the Carolinas. There were many more "Tories" as a percentage of the Southern colonists; the population was spread out much farther than in the relatively urbanized North; the conflict consisted as much of guerrilla reprisals, civilian against civilian on both sides, as it did of pitched battles between organized regular troops.

In other words, the kind of thing the victims, both Loyalist and Rebel, would readily have called "terrorism", had the word been invented.

By the way -- the culminating battle in The Patriot, and the tactic the Colonials used to win it, did actually occur.
