One of the sub-heads on today's Tampa Tribune reads: "USF Wants Islamic Clothing Exception."
USF is asking NCAA to grant an exception to its uniform policy by allowing a Muslim player to wear Islamic clothing on the basketball court.
A 22 year old Muslim left the team and walked away from her scholarship when her coach told her she could not wear religiously mandated clothing during practices or games. She wanted to wear long pants, a top with long sleeves and a head scarf.
Under NCAA rules, religious issues are not mentioned, but all team members are required to wear the same uniform.
Ahmed Bedier (Council on American-Islamic Relations) said, "An athlete should not be asked to choose between engaging in healthy sporting activities and her deeply held religious beliefs."
Curious as to positions, and reasons held by participants on these boards might yield?
