You know, the more I look at this, the more I wonder where the problem actually lies.

Your summary of part of the article's content has me wondering.

USF is asking NCAA to grant an exception to its uniform policy by allowing a Muslim player to wear Islamic clothing on the basketball court.

A 22 year old Muslim left the team and walked away from her scholarship when her coach told her she could not wear religiously mandated clothing during practices or games. She wanted to wear long pants, a top with long sleeves and a head scarf.

Under NCAA rules, religious issues are not mentioned, but all team members are required to wear the same uniform.

If the NCAA says that their rules require short pants and bare heads, not just "the same uniform" as defined by the school, they need to reexamine their rules. Their opportunity to show flexibility and relevance will be on display.

If the coach is the one who, through lack of flexibility and imagination, failed to find the place where the uniform accomodated the student's religious beliefs while remaining "uniform", then USF needs to have a little talk with the athletic director. Their willingness to act as intermediary and advocate for their students will be on display.

If the student walked in to practice and made a declaration, "These are my clothes, this is my religion, like it or lump it," as a surprise, without the necessary discussion beforehand, and the coach said, "You're not in charge here," then the student and her religious advisor have picked a fight where none need have existed. Does the kid want to play ball, or would she rather be a poster child? Their choice of confrontation or negotiation in the quest for change will be on display.

Please keep us posted on the details of this case, will you? I'm curious to know how it really started, and how it's resolved.
