With a Windows system, after many months of adding programs, accumulating registry junk, and various glitches, eventually you have to bite the bullet and scrape the drive clean and reinstall the OS and the applications. A tedious process at best. Simply restoring it from a Ghost-type backup restores the sludge as well, so there's no real alternative.
