Hurricane Ivan was no better

Hey RL, while you sit on your mount somewhere in Hawaii waiting for your dye to warm up, I realize you've become the EXPERT on death tolls from Florida hurricanes. This has been a gutteral response to make fun of me.

I never did defer to you after all your insults and chastising because as far as I am concerned, I still haven't talked to all of those who would KNOW (not guess, like you do). Florida real estate and tourism is a strong enough reason to keep the death toll down. We don't want any old ladies found under their roofs or poor families squashed in their trailers.
No. There can be BILLIONS of dollars of damage, 50 foot storm surges, 160,000 homes demolished but there were NO dead. Poof!
They all evacuated, just like they were told to do.

I spoke with a man from Pensacola last night who asked ME if I believed in the reported death tolls. At first I thought he was talking about heart attacks or vehicle accidents AFTER the storms. Yet he told me about the horrific damage up there and the 50 foot storm surge that came through the Gulf with Hurricane Ivan. He said a friend of his who worked with the local sheriff's department had told HIM that FEMA and the National Guard had ordered 300 body bags for the aftermath and that certain areas were blocked off and were only accessible by the National Guard. He was curious about the practise and wanted to know if we had anything like this happen here. That's when I repeated the story I had heard from Port Charlotte when Hurricane Charlie came in as a Category 4 (so was Ivan).

I am not repeating this to gall you, but to enable others to look at some strikingly similiar facts and keep an open mind. I have spoken with several people involved in rescue and clean up operations. I'd like to know how you can say any of of this impossible when you don't live in Florida and you don't get to talk to anyone who lives or works here.
