re: Sad.

As a very theologically liberal Christian, and as someone who is very sensitive to fundies doing things like screwing up science education, I think they are about the same, or even less, than they were 20 years ago.
What is changed is that people are seeing that the lefties in the US are imposing, without vote or passed law, severe restrictions on freedom of expression that some claim is religious.
The rewrite of the definition of marriage is a great example of this.
It is not possible to say that the gay marriage propnents are pursuing a cause that represents anything other than the imposition on people of an unwelcome way to define marriage. But the extremists went to a friendly court and had that definiton imposed over the will of those who ahve to live with it.
The ridiculous case to have the courts rewrite the Pledge of Allegiance is another example. Knowing they could not prevail for a rewrite in the public opinion market democratically, they snuck in, again, into a friendly court and attempted to have it imposed.
I know of no voter who thinks that protestants are going to get a special consideration under the law, and frankly it would be totally unconsitutional.
IMHO the vote was about resisting the undemocratic imposition of that kind of crap more than anything else.
Freedom means being free. the left does not like that, it seems.
