Interviewed here. As with most real people, he doesn't fit comfortably into anyone's stereotype, either gung-ho warrior or helpless victim. Just getting the job done so he can go home. Willie and Joe would understand.
I was amused that his medic, certainly no girly-man, is on him to quit, too.
I also loved the origin of his town's name.
