re: multiple systems

You'd have to do the numbers to see how you'd come out with solar heating vs. natural gas home and water heating. Now, if your heating is electrical...

I just got a heat pump for my office. Turns out about 8000 BTUs for 800 watts of power, which I believe is quite an improvment over an electrical heater. It sure works better than the electric one did.

Heat pumps make sense in milder climates. If you live in northern Minnesota or something, there isn't much point to them. By the same token, my Dad (in Minnesota) installed a gas furnace of such marvelous efficiency that it doesn't have a chimney any more, just a PVC pipe that exhausts warm, damp air. When I replaced my furnace a few years back (adding central air in the bargain), the contractor told me that in my climate, that kind of efficiency would not be worth the money. I got a reasonably-efficient model, with a normal chimney.
