Your initial rant was not about competative prizes - you suggested a conspiracy regarding limiting data return from the MERS.
To propse such a conspiracy is such monumental folly that it doesnt bear mentioning.
You have steering the discussion away from this - having been totally shot down in flames by mulitple rebutals, some of which were by me - toward the issue of competative contracting.
Ironically - many of the MER components were competatively contracted. As was the launch vehicle.
There is no company on the planet that would answer a call for a competative prize to land a rover on mars. Only one body has every succesfully done it, and only one body has a chance of doing it again - and that's NASA/JPL.
Now - are you going to apologise for or retract your hiddeous miss-information regarding how many colour image can or have been sent back by MER, and how this compared to MPF?

- 2004 cellphones offer it for a fraction of the cost. Why no Mars prizes yet?

- Prizes permit economies of scale; and litigation-aversive R&D isn't needed (unlike w/ cars)
