What the Left has done worthwhile lately...

It would depend on your definition of the Left, of course.

Spoke up for the environment. Whether you agree with the science or not, it means there will continue to be a discussion.

Defended political speech, including some speech not particularly attractive to it. [Those who will do so anyway may curse the ACLU in this space. Those who hold that universities are controlled by the Left with the intent to suppress Rightist student speech may catcall in this space. Those who believe the Left is organized and unified enough to have conspired together to deprive the Right of its free speech rights may call their mental health care provider to make an appointment in this space.]

Attempted to allow homosexual people to make decisions for their terminally ill partners, etc., by extending the legal protections of domestic partnership to them.

Were the first to speak up for the oppressed women of Afghanistan, even though roundly ignored by the Right until the oppressors also sheltered the engineers of 911.

Fought to keep religion out of the public schools generally, and out of the science classroom in particular. [Those who think that religion belongs in the public schools may hiss in this space. Please specify in which religion's name you hiss, or that you hiss in support of whichever religion happens to be the majority religion.]

Continued to point out that fighting AIDS without mentioning condoms because it offends the Right's fundamentalist constituency is, to put it kindly, counterproductive.

Kept alive the idea that drug use and abuse is a health problem and is better treated by doctors and nurses than by police officers and officers of the court.

Continued to push for adequate health care that will not bankrupt the working poor or leave the elderly poor in substandard nursing facilities.

Had the nerve to be outraged as well as embarrassed by the use of torture as a questioning technique by otherwise civilized nations.
