Well, even though I like to bash the UN as much as any fascist rightwinger, there is one aspect about this UN bashing, I wonder about:
Immediate action is of course vital, but the long term working of this problem would have significant value. "Everyone" is saying that one fear is that this aid won't be sustained. Maybe one way to look at this is that while everyone is talking about the value of being engaged in the "long haul", the UN with it's 5 star hotels & etc are *DOING* this. Just a possible aspect that could be considered.
But this doesn't mean I think the UN is doing a good job. And one area that UN really screwed up in regards to this relief effort is the way the handled this diplomatically. And considering the whole job of the UN is to be good at diplomacy, it's a very serious screw up. And this screw up shouldn't be seen as some freak accident- it should be seen as an indication of a fundemental problem that needs to be systematically reviewed and fixed. [And not just address it's tendency to be staffed with people who seem to have an Anti-American bias]

- How many bases does the UN have? How many helicopters?
- All their bases are belong to us (n/t)
- Fine. Then maybe the U.N. should start remembering who's doing the heavy lifting.
- PS: You made an interesting choice of board for a discussion.
