Sorry Tom, but if you expect "gratitude" for doing the right thing then you are showing an abysmal lack of love, humanity, and morality. This position shows the milk of human kindness has curdled.
As individuals and as a society we should be educated to be just, fair, and compassionate. Doing the right thing should be a guiding principle.
To the extent the people of this nation do this, we will be judged, possibly envied, but most certainly emulated by the people of the rest of the world. Teaching by example is one of the most potent educational tools.
As other peoples will tend to envy us, they will object to what we do, they will attack our principle and will be dangerous. If we are consistent they will wear down and gradually adopt any strategy we use that is successful. This is the power of convergence theory-if it works for you, it will work for me.
But we can't look for gratitude as our reward. This is the same as looking for love from a whore because you paid her. In spite of the neomarxism of conservatives, money is not the sole motivation for human activity.
