Used to be, we could not recycle them in our recy barrel. Now we can, so that's better. They are useless to me in the house, though. And they are bulky when wadded up and need to be dealt with. Another chore.
For shopping I use a bag I got for free from a hardware store when I bought something heavy (a 12V battery charger). It's a synthetic weave sort of thing. The handstraps are a little long for my short legs (also, they have stretched over the years - the thing is darned near indestructable, I think) so I tie them together with an overhand knot to shorten them.
I use this bag 3/4 of the time that I walk to Trader Joe's. The rest of the time I let them bestow one of their paper bags on me. I use these to collect recyclables in my home and then throw the bag+recys in the barrel at once. Handy.
I don't bother using this bag when I go to the regular store; I just get plastics.
I throw my bag in the laundry when I think about it. Probably 6-8 times a year. No plagues yet.

We can get the plastic bags here, still. But I hate the things.

- Yeah they got rid of them in several towns in Washington. They were great for cleaning the cat box. n/t
- I regard this as a reasonably senseless action.
