They are a global one, and they are only a tip of the iceberg of a much larger problem. After reading some of your posts, and reflecting on our comments on this issue, I doubt if a town, or even a state, can really make much of a difference in its own jurisdiction by passing such legislation.
However, the action taken by your town does send a message to higher levels of government and communicates public concern to our politicians at the state and federal level. This message helps counterbalance the virtually limitless finanacial resources that are available to large corporations to allow them to lobby legislatures and influence politicians to protect their questionable antisocial activities from public scrutiny and outrage. Too often, by forcing public health and resource management issues to be dealt with only at the local level, it pretty much ensures that no meaningful public debate or action on them can occur at all. This is, in my opinion, not an unfortunate consequence, but a deliberate strategy.
I salute your town for its progressive action, and I thank you for bringing it to our attention.

- We can get the plastic bags here, still. But I hate the things.
- Yeah they got rid of them in several towns in Washington. They were great for cleaning the cat box. n/t
- I regard this as a reasonably senseless action.
