According to a respectable source, the numbers you cited have no real scientific basis, a point you are desperately evading.
Odds are quite good somebody simply made them up. Not too surprising, I see it a lot. I've also seen those same baseless statistics on hundreds of other websites.
This isn't a game. How I live my daily life is being decided by liars and idiots, and not just on this front.
As for debris gathering, I believe we were discussing plastic bags, not discarded nets and fishing boats.
