My original post was on a specific person, and mentioned at the end that parts of the Left were making a major issue about this Bush/Sistani thing. I didn't include other links, but probably should have.
That election would not have happened if Bush hadn't done what he did, and done it in the face of furious opposition, with most of the Democrats dragging their feet the whole damn way. Whether the election happened sooner or later is infantile nitpicking on the part of those who have been pressing this silly "Bush didn't want elections right away" point in the media, the blogosphere, and elsewhere.
There was great glee in the Democratic Party when things got rough. Abu Ghraib. Military losses. Setbacks in policy and schedule.
Now we finally had another big success over there, and the news was full of joyful Iraqis raising their painted fingers. Suddenly it isn't as much fun anymore in some parts of Washington. When those pictures came in, there were one or two politicians who looked like they'd just eaten a bad clam.
If Iraq finally manages to eventually become a free nation, there aren't going to be a hell of a lot of Democratic fingerprints on that success (never mind a lot of Europe), and about the time of the State of the Union address, the Democrats were just starting to realize it.
And frankly, what Tony wrote doesn't change anything about what all is going on out there. I wish people would stop acting like this board is the only thing I read all day.
Doug's response is a lot more typical. I'm fully aware that Bush could cure cancer, and that the response from some people would be bitching about how that would create a horrible population explosion.
