France to tube the EU?
Unlikely as it may seem, the French people may vote "non" to approval of the EU constitution in late May. One no vote kills the required unanimous verdict. Meanwhile, several other even more autocratic European countries, notably Germany, have bypassed the risky threat of public voting and legislated or edicted acceptance. Alles ist ordnung. Now that the reality of the EU no longer resembles greater France, given the addition of Eastern European countries and the threat of a potential membership by Turkey, the French are less enamoured of the idea. Another key roadblock is the emergence of unfettered EU competition in the service sector. The threat of cheaper service sector labor worries the provincial French.
