Actually I think the concept of the EU is great; it's the implementation that's seriously flawed. Good idea for Eurofolk to get together and drop trade barriers & inter-EU passports. Fund scientific research (e.g. ESA). Probably good to form an EU military alliance, but that non-US participant successor to NATO would take $.
Downsides include a 500 page burdensome constitution, lack of recourse by citizens, lack of voter accountability for regulators, and strict economic regulations conversely flaunted by the original major partners, France and Germany??? And that's just a start.
