I have a sneaking suspicion that France's relationship with the European Union will be more or less what it was with NATO. For those who have forgotten, France pulled out of the military wing of NATO during the height of the Cold War. That was an amazing act of betrayal. Here we were all standing on the same anvil together with the hammer of the Soviet Union poised over us. Then France tries unsucessfully to sabotage NATO (the one alliance protecting us all including France) and cut a separate deal with the Soviets. We (the United States and Britain) were monumental idiots for having made France a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council. We then compounded our idiocy by including France within NATO. One would think that others could learn from our stupidity.
