I think that more current research says that these intense GRBs are far less frequent (within deadly range) now than they were in the early universe. Some cite this as an answer to "Where Are They?" because only over the last 10exp9 years or so of the universe has the background GRB rate decreased snough to stop multicellular extinction events.
