No offense but you seem to be assuming whatever you are using to block the light will cast an expanding shadow- that is incorrect. By your logic somehow this coffee can is supposed to block all the photons that would have otherwise been spread across the surface of the earth....
A coffee can sized shield would protect a coffee can sized area.
