I think the misunderstanding is simply one of scale.... You were picturing the light from the event to be an expanding sphere- and it is, so an object casting a shadow WILL cast an expanding shadow.... the problem is that on the tiny scale of our solar system the surface of the multi billion light year diameter sphere is essentially flat.
