Question for fellow Firefox users

I did a complete hardware upgrade a couple weeks ago, which naturally came with a newer OS (formerly ran Win98SE, now WinXP/SP2). On the old system, I had FF tweaked so that special characters -- like "curly quotes" in Word and WP, for instance -- were displayed as they were meant to be seen.

Upon installing FF on this new box, the problem returned. I've switched the "Character Encoding" selection a bunch of times, and nothing seems to work, though I could swear one did work on the previous setup... and, predictably, I forgot to note the changes I'd made, and the old box has since been reformatted and retired.

So I'm wondering -- Is it the browser alone? Is it the browser in combination with XP? Do I have a clue?
