I Googled "UTF-1" after my last post, and found a site which told me a lot of stuff I didn't understand, but included a sort of history of the UTF protocols (or whatever they are).
I seem to recall that, when running Win98SE, switching FF to UTF-8 cleared the problem. That hasn't worked, this time.
Oh well, I'll just have to live with the occasional gobbledygook. Thanks for the suggestions!
BTW, I also had a look at the code for HZ in the "View Source" window. Robert specifies the charset as UTF-16.
