Gee, more 'alternate history'...

The piece to which you link is awash in more irony than I believe its own author is aware. Its premise is twofold: that the various US intelligence services were capable of discerning the potential threat embodied by al-Qaeda prior to September 2001, and that the Bush administration would act upon it.

Obviously, the former never occurred. Those are, after all, the same intelligence services whose visions of stockpiled weapons of mass death were most often touted at the beginning of the campaign to justify the invasion of Iraq...

As to the latter: not bloody likely.

I submit that, if the World Trade Center were still standing (and no other attack had been made on American soil), the first four years of the Bush White House would quickly have become known for isolationist bluster and failure to enact a coherent domestic economic policy -- in other words, the course it was already set upon -- punctuated by occasional offical 'regrets' to governments (such as Australia) whose citizens were killed in terrorist bombings elsewhere in the world.

And there would have been no second four years.

The piece also presumes initiation of impeachment proceedings over far fewer deaths of American soldiers and foreign civilians than has occurred in real life, for no better justification. Sadly, one could infer therefrom that it is only the destruction of the WTC, magically making revenge indistinguishable from justice, which mollifies the reaction of the American people to all that has come after.
