A student of history realizes that parties come and go, nations rise and fall. If one lets the fortunes of either party or nations determine one's happiness one is doomed to manic behavior. Swinging the spectra from highs to lows and letting others actions or outside circumstances control one's personal happiness instead of being in control of one's own emotional well being.
It's a subtle thing, the way one slowly allows events, elections or what-have-you influence one's trajectory and consciousness. Bitterness about circumstances beyond one's control taint the ONE thing you truly CAN control - and that is your reaction to all these things that surround you.
The Right, The Left...the politicians and the particulars of history in this point of time-space are just the backdrop. You and your thoughts and actions are the only things that truly matter.
When seen in proper context, the outcome of elections and the machinations of political parties is about as significant as a dog urinating on a fireplug--less actually.
It's how you handle loss and victory that matters...and one must treat those two imposters just the same.
