If the solar panels were placed 6-10 inches higher than the roof it might work.
The air space would both insulate and shade the house making airconditioning requirements less on very hot sunny days.
You could then even hook up the solar panels if that suits your fancy!
(In otherwords, the shade from the solar panel might be just as valuable, if not even more valuable than the power itself in very hot sunny areas)
