I suppose its possible previous medical advice was based on error.

It's always been my understanding that the human body must have a certain minimum amount of salt to maintain health. It has also been my understanding that consumption of salt, particularly in American processed food products, far exceeds the minimum daily requirements required by the body.

If this new data is to be believed, it may very well be true that we have exaggerated, or have even been totally mistaken, about the dangers of excessive salt in diet; that it actually has no particularly deleterious effect at all.

But how can we blame the "Obamas and Bloombergs of the world" from urging people to do what was recommended by the medical establishment?

Just from the indignant tone of your polemic, I suspect that you are more concerned about the effect of "junk ideology" on corporations than you are about the health of people. Policy makers, health activists or advocates and public opinion are dependent on the recommendation of specialists in the field of policy in question. They cannot be blamed for following the advice of medical science rather than first waiting for it to be vetted by those who use salt as a flavor enhancer in bland and insipid processed junk foods. That would be like going to the energy industry for advice on climate change.

Next time, if you have a blatant ideological axe to grind, save it for Current Events or Flame, and spare the Comestibles board your rants.

Personally, I hope this research holds up. I have always seasoned my own food to my taste. As long as the ingredients are on the label and I or my doctor have access to the latest research, I have no problem. I never felt abused or intimidated by the food police.
