I'm not sure I'd ever have the nerve to do it. One of the great mysteries of life to me is what holds a consciousness tacked onto a certain brain. Would the person reassembled at the other end be me, as in the self-aware person sitting behind my eyeballs, or just an exact duplicate that's actually someone else? While the original--ME--gets frigging DISINTEGRATED.
Wouldn't matter to anyone else in the world, my family, my friends, my dog, nobody.
But it would make a difference to ME. And there's no possible way to test it first, is there? Is Star Trek consigning millions of people to oblivion each day, replacing them with exact duplicates, and never knowing it?
Same for the idea of downloading your consciousness into a chip or computer when your body gives out. You get a computer with your personality, but sorry pal. YOU are still sitting in that chair with wires on your head, dying of cancer.
