Here is a thought on the subject. If you had this technology to make copies of yourself, using local matter, you could send ships with this technology all over the galaxy. Once they reach their destination, they start making copies of the thousands of people they have stored in database.
The original people are still back on Earth, but their copies are populating the galaxy.
I mentioned in another thread about a story I am working on, where humans know the paths every atom has taken. With this knowledge, and technology, they are able to recreate the past on a copy of the Earth. But what happens to the people of the past they recreate. Do they have consciousness?
The machines that control the past simulation control every atom, making sure they stay on their correct paths as time advances, but do the recreated people they are controlling have the same thoughts they had in the past?
What if they turn this feature off and let the atoms go where they want, giving the recreated people free will? I would suspect history would turn out differently and not follow the same path, because these recreated people would have their own thoughts. Those thoughts may be similar to the people they were copied after, but the chaos theory suggest they would diverge from their historical path.
