SETI and Religion and Society go hand-in-hand

Religion has dealt with the concept of other worlds and alien life for thousands of years. It will be a large factor in humanity's reaction to our first real detection of ETI.

Some groups will embrace it as a testimony to God's greatness. Others will be shattered when they learn that they weren't God's "chosen ones". Still others will treat the aliens AS gods or demons.

And still even others will go "So who got kicked off American Idol this week?"

I highly recommend Frank White's book The SETI Factor.

The fact that Carl Sagan's Contact, both the film and the novel, dealt with religion in the context of the discovery of ETI was no mere footnote.
