I'm currently president of both NSS Seattle and Mars Society Puget Sound. When we do schools (never done a boy scout troop, yet) we setup a display which has Hubble, asteroids, comets, the Moon and Mars information and images. Maybe that is the reason we get different result than you, Ken. We purposefully seek out everyone and talk about any space subject without censorship of anykind.
Currently comets, asteroids and Mars are very popular and yes we get questions like, "Weren't dinosaurs killed off by a comet?" or "Could a comet kill us?", from the kids all the time. Difference is I also talk to the parents and their concerns are more like, "How can we afford this Moon/Mars mission of Bush's?", few are worried about asteroids hitting Earth anytime soon. And as I have said we do malls and at them is a true sample of USA's population. They don't much care about any of this as long as it is cheap. they like Hubble and know stuff about, but are confused where the MER rovers are (Saturn?, the Moon? or Mars?).
