These could be from natural phenomena like localized whirlwinds or something.

How is that 'cutting Lindy some slack'? She's not interested in natural phenomena as an explanation. To 'cut her slack', you'd have to quote von Daniken or someone like that. You're just trying to be nice, maybe.
