re: blowing it
Geez, we have suck and blow in the same thread... must be a fan running somewhere. Seems as if some people were standing in front of it when the shit hit.

It was a huge challenge to move relief supplies into the region givent that many bridges were damaged or destroyed, the airports were flooded, roads and railroads were blocked by downed trees and debris.
I think you'd be surprised at how many of "us" -- that, is, we who think the Bush Admin and its pet agency, DHS, should have done better -- are taking in to account Katrina's demolition of transportation routes.
The more important question remains: When were they mobilized and given the "go" order? How long did it take between the order to report for duty and the order to roll? There was constant monitoring of Katrina, and two or three days of landfall prediction, after the storm cleared Florida and headed into the Gulf. [Apparently, no one in government watches the Weather Channel, logs into Accuweather.com, or pays attention to the Federal agency that provides the commercial weather services with their information: NOAA.]
This administration won re-election on their "record" -- which, of course, being at least half secret, cannot by independently verified -- of protecting its people. This administration deliberately folded FEMA into DHS. The American public they swore to protect were promised thereby that response to any disaster would be swift, decisive, and prepared for in advance, no matter its cause.
We know about logistics. We know about collapsed bridges, blocked roads, widespread flooding. We also have 100 years of data on the effect of hurricanes, and the ability to anticipate such effects occuring again. Some of us have the brains to connect dots... but not, it would seem, the man who enforced rules for Arabian horse owners, nor the man who appointed him head of FEMA.
