It's art. It can be drivel to you.

That doesn't make it drivel to everyone.

A critic, a contemporary of Tchaikovsky, once called Tchaikovsky's only violin concerto unplayable and "odiously Russian". As I'm sure you know, it is considered one of the greatest violin concerti of all time, and is usually paired with Mendelsohn's for performance.

That critic was wrong in his assessment of the quality of the work, and wrong in his assessment of its durability, but he was dead on about his opinion of it.

History will judge Pinter's poetry. It will speak to some and not to others in this time while he's still living, and later when he is still remembered by those who met him. Only after the last child who ever met the old man is dead will we know if it has a voice to carry itself.

But still: he won the Nobel for his drama. So all this is beside the point.
