re: Eating disorders and body image

The entire Barbie thing is part of the same reflexive anti-consumerism that makes people apoplectic if you mention "McDonalds." It's not about self-image, it's about corporations, consumerism, and the decadent West.

I have a hard time believing that if you interviewed a teenage bulemic, she would cite the Barbie she had when she was eight as part of the problem.

You might have a plausible case when discussing fashion models, music idols, or peer pressure. Music in particular...would Mama Cass, who had a voice like you wouldn't believe, make it in today's music world? I can have someone show me a picture of one of the seemingly dozens of interchangable blonde, belly-buttoned pierced singers, and I couldn't tell you which one it was to save my life.

I have never hung around with the kind of guys who think about their pecs at all, much less obsess on them. Cholesterol count? Yes. I do know a few health freaks who take a lot of vitamins.
