Iraq was just not a serious threat to American well-being, but we've managed to turn it into a rallying point for anyone who might think it'd be interesting to take up arms and have a swipe at us. True, averting the invasion does not necessarily mean they would have spent their days knitting mittens...but how many (we'll never know) may have gone from marching and shouting and burning US flags to actively planning to kill Americans.
I guess there's a possibility that sometime in the future, a stable democracy in Iraq could inspire positive changes in the rest of the region, but frankly that looks to be one gigantic, expensive and bloody gamble. I'm not sure we had the right to roll the dice on Iraq's future the way we have, regardless of Saddam's lunacy.
